Abstract : This thesis deals with the measurement of laminar burning velocity of CO2/N2 diluted DME-air mixtures at elevated temperatures. The effect of CO2/N2 dilution on the laminar burning velocity of premixed dimethyl ether (DME)-air mixtures was determined experimentally at atmospheric pressure and elevated mixture temperatures using a planar flame stabilization method. Planar flames at different initial temperatures 〖(T〗_u) and location were stabilized using a mesoscale high aspect-ratio diverging channel with inlet dimensions of 25 mm × 2 mm by placing an external electric heater beneath the channel with the channel height to the heater and overlap distance maintained at 2cm respectively. The Stabilized planar flame was independent of any stretch effect. The experiments were carried out for a range of equivalence ratio, (0.8≤ Φ ≤ 1.3) and temperature ranging from 330-570 K. Magnitudes of the burning velocity were extracted by using the mass conversation equation. A Comparison between the resulting burning velocities with the numerical prediction and detailed flame structure using Zhao mechanism for DME-air mixtures were also made which are in good agreement with the present experiment. The results show the burning velocity decreases monotonously with the increase in percentage dilution for both inert gas dilution while the maximum burning velocity reported is for slightly rich mixture for all the dilution cases. In addition to this, the variation of temperature exponent with the equivalence ratio is also reported. The addition of CO2 has profound influence upon burning velocity when compared to N2 addition on both burning velocity and temperature exponent.
