Abstract : Polypyrrole has been successfully electrodeposited on the surface of SS of type 304 containing copper by using cyclic voltammetry from aqueous sulfuric acid containing pyrrole monomer. The electrodeposition process was found to decrease with successive cycling, increase of scan rate and pH. While, it increases largely with increasing of acid (up to 0.1M) and monomer concentrations, and temperature. The activation energy of PPy electrodeposition was evaluated, 98.1 kJ mol-1. Three PPy- PoPD mixtures have been electrochemically deposited on the SS surface, copolymer and two different bilayers. The copolymer was prepared from a mixture of 0.1M Py and 0.05M oPD in 0.1 M H2SO4 and two bilayers, PoPD/PPy and PPy/ PoPD, were prepared by successive electrodeposition, during which different multiphase structures were obtained. The PPy, PoPD, copolymer, PoPD/PPy and PPy/PoPD coatings were tested as protective layers of the SS substrate. All the coatings kept the SS in passive state in hot acid solution. The modified SSs of these electrodes exhibited different resistance behaviors in aggressive chloride solutions. The modified SSs of the bilayer coatings showed higher resistant than those of the copolymer or the homopolymer coatings. The modified-PoPD/PPySS exhibited the highest resistant while the modified-copolymer SS exhibited less resistant than those of the homopolymer coatings. The less conductive polymer PoPD improved the protection role of the higher conductive polymer PPy by enhancing the formation of the underlying oxide film in the case of bilayer coatings, but it decreased this role in case of the copolymer coating.
