Abstract : The immune system is one of the important systems in the body, and it is the most important up-regulating body machinery. Recently attention has long been paid to alternative medicine tools that share in healing damages of this system. The importance of some food items that share in the role of modulation to the immune and different other body systems is mentioned in the holy Quran, before thousands of years. We conducted an in vivo experiment to investigate whether ten-food items-out of thirteen-will be capable to elicit an effect to the immune system. Immune related parameters, such as total white blood cells count, total lymphocyte and sub-lymphocyte cells, subsequently examined. However, antibody titers, phagocytes number and activities have a close relation with immunity; therefore we investigated the immune profile too. Moreover, thymus and spleen weights together with some performance parameters were also measured. One hundred thirty two male Wister rats were divided into three groups; each group consists of 44 rats. All groups received the same basic diet and drank water, and furthermore all groups gavaged orally with the ten food items-separately- for 5 weeks, following an organized instruction, ensuring that each cage of 4 rats will be specified for one food item. All used items-except gourd- induced an increase in white blood cells counts, and all-except gourd-induced an increase in total lymphocytes counts, meanwhile all items-except grape, onion and pomegranate- enhances a B-lymphocytes proliferation, that means it stimulated the humoral immunity, observed in the raised titers of IgM antibody with banana, cucumber, ginger and gourd. All items-except fig- inhibited the natural killer cells, indicating that fig has a humoral and other means of immune system enhancement. Banana, cucumber, dates; figs, garlic, and ginger recorded a significant decreased in phagocytic numbers. The same-significantly lower results were observed in phagocytic activity for banana, cucumber, dates, and pomegranate. A marked induction in the thymus weight was noted with all items, yet it bears no definite or clear correlation with the subclasses of lymphocytes, the same could be applied to the observed changes of the spleen weight and its relation to the lymphocytes subclasses. Our findings indicated that all the tested items could be safely consumed in a contribution to protect against diseases, by fluctuating the immune system according to the requirements.
